GEORGE WASHINGTON COMMEMORATIVE TEXTILE FROM 1783.. This piece is pictured in "Threads of History" as catalog entry #6, and is described as "English yard goods" produced in 1783. It is entitled "America Presenting at the Alter of Liberty Medallions of Her Illustrious Sons." Seven such medallions are shown, depicting thirteen heroes of the American Revolution, including Washington, Baron Von Steuben, John Jay, General Horatio Gates, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and others. A standing Washington is attended by Miss Liberty and is crowned with laurel by a cherub proclaiming "Washington and Independence." This commemorative textile measures 60 x 67", is printed in red and white, and constitutes a panel of drapery. It is composed of one large panel, three smaller squares stitched together at the bottom, and some decorative trim applied to the top. There are two and one-half complete images from the overall pattern. There is some fading along one vertical fold and some light fade to the bottom, but colors are generally strong. There are some minor imperfections, but the item is remarkably well-preserved considering its antiquity. Contemporary Washington textiles are quite scarce and this is a fine display piece.
