    Description

George Washington: A Display Containing Two Rare Artifacts. The first is a small piece of wood marked "Washington coffin." Mounted with it is the original paper in which it was wrapped and stored, on which is neatly lettered in pencil: "A portion of the coffin of General George Washington presented March 1868 by John Smithers - taken from coffin at the time of removal of his remains to the marble sarcophagus," which was made by Smithers and Sons. Also displayed is a small cloth fragment with a handwritten note stating "This is a piece off the flag that was flown over the head of George Washington at his inauguration as president of the United States". A second longer letter dated May 26, 1921 and signed by one Private First Class A. W. Duck of the 22nd US infantry confirms the provenance. The display is accompanied by a program from the May 26, 1921 ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the gifting of this flag to the city of New York. A photo on the program shows the flag in tatters, and presumably the small fragment was removed during the process of relocating the flag from City Hall to the Metropolitan Museum. The program confirms an active military participation in the process.

This 31" x 19" display presents two rare relics of the first president, along with convincing vintage documentation.
