Franklin D. Roosevelt: His Harvard Fraternity Pin. Gold with onyx and pearl inlays. "F D Roosevelt" engraved on back. Made with a loop to be worn on a watch chain. 13 mm x 19 mm.
This very special FDR personal artifact was found with an interesting group of paper ephemera (see adjoining three lots) which came from a New York society matron, Mrs. W. Gordon Crawford, who apparently knew the Roosevelts through a social connection and became a close friend of the president's mother, Sarah. The Crawfords were also apparently active Democratic Party supporters, since the archive included a 1934 personal letter from Herbert Lehman thanking them for help with his campaign. It seems at some point the president or his mother gifted the pin to Mrs. Crawford as a remembrance.
