Franklin D. Roosevelt: Awesome Posthumously-Awarded CIO Gold Medal by Jo Davidson. 57 mm (2.25" diameter) 14K solid gold medal awarded to FDR (posthumously) on September 14, 1946. The occasion was the annual meeting of the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations) held in Rochester, N.Y. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. accepted the award on behalf of his father, after introductory remarks by former New York Governor Herbert Lehman. The obverse of the beautifully designed medal shows a standing factory worker. The edge reads: "In Lasting Gratitude To Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1946". The reverse has a small bust of FDR signed "Davidson" beneath the inscription: "From The C.I.O. Council Of The State Of New York For The Tireless Service He Gave To The Toilers Of This Nation And The World". The C.I.O. was founded on November 9, 1936 as an offshoot of the A.F.L. (American Federation of Labor). In contrast to the AFL, they sought to organize workers on an industry-wide basis (all employees in a certain sector or industry) vs. organizing workers based solely on their craft or skill. Their first president was John L. Lewis. Labor, in general, was hugely supportive of Roosevelt and vice-versa. Two John L. Lewis endorsement buttons are known linking Lewis & FDR. Jo Davidson (1883-1952) was active in left-wing political causes and government sponsorship of the arts. He sculpted many busts of politicians and celebrities and designed the 1945 FDR inaugural medal. The medal is housed in its original custom-fitted wood, leather and velvet case. Outside of a small carbon spot on the reverse edge, it is in great condition, as-issued. It weighs a tick over 3 Troy Ounces. From the Collection of David and Janice Frent.Auction Info
