First Lady Florence Harding: Black Cape Worn on Election Day 1920 with Gloves. 46" long pleated wool cape worn by Florence Harding when she and her husband cast votes in the Presidential Election of 1920. Ironically, Mrs. Harding cast her first vote under the 19th Amendment on behalf of her husband, soon-to-be President-Elect Warren G. Harding. Press photos of the pair at their polling station show this exact garment being worn. No labels present. The lot also includes a fine pair of 32" kid gloves with pearl buttons. The First Lady had several sets of these gloves, typically worn when greeting visitors to the White House. They may or may not be the identical pair used when voting in 1920. Accompanied by some research papers and letters of provenance indicating the trail of ownership from Harding's granddaughter to the owner of the Heritage antique shop in Marion, Ohio.Auction Info
