    Description

Winfield Scott: An Incredible "For President" Daguerreotype for the 1852 Whig Presidential Candidate. In near-mint condition, this spectacular item is one of the earliest known photographic campaign items. It consists of a very clear image of Scott, set into a gilt brass shell frame with "For President Winfield Scott" boldly incused in block letters. Holed at the top for suspension. 2.125" x 2.5" in size.

One of the "signature items" in the Berman Collection, it was unknown to DeWitt/Sullivan. We have seen upwards of ten similar pieces for Daniel Webster, clearly by the same manufacturer, one of with appeared as lot 42010 in the first Berman auction. But, while presumed to be a political item, the Webster version differs in a critical respect. It lacks the magic words "For President." And of course Scott is much more collectible, being a major-party nominee, whereas Webster was an unsuccessful "hopeful" in 1852.

For dazzling display appeal, rarity, and importance in the evolution of political campaign items, this Scott piece must rank among the most desirable such items in the hobby. We are aware of only one example, reportedly in equally fine condition, which changed hands privately many years ago for a reported $20,000, and now resides in a top collection from which it is unlikely to emerge for many years, if ever. One of the earliest photographic campaign items, and most probably a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the serious collector.

Interestingly, hobbyists have speculated for years as to whether a Pierce mate was produced. The question was answered several years ago, when a mid-Atlantic collectibles auction sold a Pierce example with serious condition issues for $13,486.
