Winfield S. Hancock: Must-Have Rebus Ferrotype Stickpin. WSH-1880-21, 22 mm x 58 mm gilt brass shell. Along with the Greeley "Pen Is mightier Than the Sword" ferrotype, this is generally considered one of the best single portrait ferrotypes of the post-Civil War period. It features an outstretched hand and sleeve with a rooster superimposed on the palm of the hand, hence "Hand Cock" or "Hancock". The slightly convex ferrotype is bright with good focus and contrast. There are some black marks on his Adam's apple and collar, but these are barely noticeable and detract minimally from the overall aesthetic appeal. These rarely appear in the market. This is the plate example from Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s Running for President, 1789-1896, page 349. This example qualifies as a "keeper" and should be a source of pride for the fortunate collector who submits the top bid.
