Description

Very Rare Large Martin Van Buren Portrait Sulfide. This large sulfide is usually found in a simple brass frame with a pin on the reverse; however, here we have only the sulfide itself. His bust is surrounded by the slogan "Van Buren. The Country Demands his Re-Election." Van Buren items are in general quite rare, and this magnificent brooch is probably the premier wearing-item for that elusive candidate. In this form it is still highly displayable, and there is always the possibility of finding an example in poor condition from which to glean a new frame.

These sulfides are notorious for their flaws in the glass itself, but this one is superb but for a trivial flaw on the "T" in "The". As usual the black paint on the back of this one had largely flaked off, especially without the protection of its brass mounting, so the black background has been professionally restored to give mint appearance. A gorgeous piece, measuring 1.25" x 1.375". On the rare occasions when these appear on the market, they customarily fetch in the $7500 range in their complete form.
