DescriptionVery Rare Breckinridge & Lane 1860 Jugate Ferrotype. Part of a set issued for all four 1860 tickets, these historic items are considered the first true jugate badges by collectors, and form the starting point for any systematic jugate run. The total known population of all varieties is certainly well under 100, and the Breckinridge and Douglas versions are considered the toughest. Auction records for this item run to the $5000 range, but the purely coincidental appearance of 6-8 examples on the market over the last several years seems to have temporarily depressed the market value, creating an excellent buying opportunity.
Most of the known examples have a beaded brass border and a filled metal back. This version has a brass frame and open back, suggesting that it was made to be mounted on something rather than to form a pinback badge. Most likely it was for a belt buckle, as we have seen various buckles from this era with political ferros or images of Civil War generals set into them. Condition is great. Diameter 21mm.
