Description

SUPERB MATCHED PAIR OF LARGE LINCOLN AND HAMLIN TINTYPES. Made around 1862, they show Lincoln with his first Vice President, Hannibal Hamlin of Maine. Displayed together they form a large and impressive "jugate!" Produced by Abbott & Co, NY, as part of a series of military and political leaders. While the Lincoln is, for obvious reasons, the premier photo in the set, Hamlin is, to our experience, actually much scarcer (indeed, we cannot recall ever having handled one before). Condition on these is breathtaking; they even retain the rarely-surviving original suspension loops at the tops. Only some light "aging" on the cardboard insert on the reverse of the Lincoln keeps us from calling this pair absolutely Near mint-Mint! Certainly the Lincoln is the finest example of the perhaps dozen we’ve had over the years. Each 1 3/8 x 1 5/8."
