DescriptionRutherford B. Hayes: A Choice 1876 Ferro and Fancy Brass Shell Frame. A notoriously difficult variety to find with a really nice tintype insert. Usually they come dark and/or with heavy crazing or flaking. The image here is as bright and clean as one could ask for. For strict accuracy we must note a few extremely minor bumps in the emulsion along the edge from 4:00 to 5:30, which clearly occurred in manufacture. The frame was originally silvered, but only a few tiny traces remain (perhaps a chemist out there will explain this phenomenon to us. It seems almost impossible for this piece to have had enough handling to cause all the silvering to wear off, especially in the many tiny indented parts of the design. So how and why has the silvering disappeared??). This variety is found suspended from a ribbon or with a pin on verso, and the present example was the latter type, although the original pin has been broken off. 1" x 1.25".

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
