Description

PREMIER GIANT 1864 LINCOLN CAMPAIGN FERROTYPE BADGE. This item presents the largest tintype portrait area not only of any Lincoln variety, but of any political ferrotype of the 1860- 80 era. As mounted, the diameter is a full 1 ¾," greater than that of a silver dollar! This is definitely a campaign issue, as a precise mate for McClellan is also known. All examples were made with a loop at the top, but this is the first we’ve seen which has what certainly appears to be a correct shield-shaped pinback brass hanger to facilitate wearing it. Condition is Excellent, as photo shows, with very clean surface free of crazing or bubbling, although it does not have that lustrous "just like the day it was made" look. Only a handful are known in the hobby, certainly fewer than ten. Coincidentally, several of those have appeared on the auction market in the last several years. The Zabriskie example sold by Sotheby’s brought upwards of $10,000, with the others bringing in excess of $5000. A very special item.
