Outstanding Large Oval 1860 Stephen Douglas Ferrotype Pin. This unlisted beauty should excite considerable interest because of its size, oval shape, and choice condition. While not quite the equal of the even larger oval version that fetched $6900 in our November 2004 auction (#609 Lot 27239), it is nonetheless a truly exceptional piece. The ferro surface is virtually flawless and bright, with just a few incredibly minor, tiny scratches on the forehead, noted strictly for accuracy (A ferro surface this large in such a clean, smooth state is a rare find indeed). Some uneven tarnishing of the brass frame only adds character. Original pin on reverse. 25mm x 32mm.
