McClellan & Pendleton: Ferrotype Jugate. 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" hand-painted silvered brass badge with oblong openings containing ferrotype portraits of the 1864 Democratic candidates, McClellan & Pendleton. Inscribed "For President & Vice President 1864". The silvering on the front has worn off and the pin is missing from the back (loop still present). The ferrotype portrait of McClellan is original to the piece and in perfect condition. The portrait of Pendleton is actually a modern tintype, die-cut to the appropriate size. The substitution is barely perceptible from a distance, but apparent when seen under magnification. The jugates issued in the election of 1864 are the rarest of all political campaign jugates. If this had both original portraits, it would be worth $25,000 or more. As is, it remains an affordable substitute. For some reason, all non-dug copies with missing photos are missing the vice presidential image. We assume the frugal manufacturers told their workers to use only a drop of glue for both images with the result that there wasn't enough glue left over for the V.P. and he eventually got "dropped from the ticket!"

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
