MARTIN VANBUREN "PEWTER RIM". Incredibly rare and important Martin VanBuren "pewter rim"  Sullivan lists no example of a VanBuren pewter rim, nor does Hake in his 1789-1916 volume.  We have seen one other in a very sophisticated private collection of a pewter-rim specialist (he has well over 20 different!).  We suspect that this example is fairly early, probably from 1836, because of its youthful portrait and smaller 37 mm size (like the Jackson and those done for GW's 1832 centennial and the 1834 death of Lafayette.  By 1840, larger sizes were adopted for pewter rims). Condition is very good, if not "minty", and certainly in acceptable bounds for an item of this nature.  There is very minor light age discoloration in the white border around the portrait.  On the reverse side, there is considerable flaking of the emulsion on the underside of the mirror, and one ding in the interior edge of the pewter rim.  None of these "condition problems" is serious, and should not discourage even a fairly condition-conscious buyer, especially considering the profound rarity of this item (we suggest you look at enlarged images of both sides on our web site to get a better sense of the condition).  Another very possible "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity"!
