Description

John Tyler: Unique Miniature Brooch. John Tyler was the first Vice President to succeed to the presidency following the death of the incumbent. The former Democrat became derisively known "His Accidency" and was extremely unpopular because of his use of vetoes and abandonment of Whig policies. It was a given that he would not be nominated as the Whig standardbearer in 1844. All Tyler material is rare. We know of one snuff box and two varieties of silk ribbons. This lovely miniature portrait brooch is, without question, the finest Tyler item in existence. The beleaguered President is shown in a hand-colored engraved portrait mounted under beveled glass. The gilt brass frame has chased, floral designs. The condition is excellent. We are aware of one previous auction appearance where it realized over $17,000.
