    Description

John C. Breckinridge: An Important, Possibly Unique Oval Ferrotype Pin in Choice Condition. Our May 18, 2015 Americana auction presented an uncut plate of oval ferrotypes including several similar Breckinridge images, but without the name above portrait (lot 42277), but this is the only example we have ever seen in finished form. It was purchased by Merrill Berman in the recent John Ford Collection auction, where it soared to nearly $4000, a tribute to its rarity and appeal. Breckinridge ferros are considered the scarcest among the four 1860 candidates, and other than the standard front and back varieties, DeWitt/Sullivan lists only several types, not including this oval mate to the more familiar Lincoln and Douglas varieties. A very special opportunity for the advanced ferro collector. 20 x 21 mm, with original pin on verso.
