Description

Jefferson Davis: Inauguration Rosette Badge. When the Confederate States of America was formed, Jefferson Davis was chosen as the provisional President. He was sworn-in at the provisional capital of Montgomery, Alabama on February 18, 1861. In November 1861, an election was held and Davis elected as the official President for a single term of six years. He ran unopposed and was inaugurated a second time in the new capital, Richmond, the following February. Southerners honored the new President on sheet music, letterheads, envelopes, ribbons and badges. We believe this badge was sold as a souvenir at the Montgomery inaugural ceremonies. It consists of a 1" albumen photo of Davis mounted on a white paper disc which, in turn, is sewn to a blue silk rosette measuring 2 1/4" across. The photograph reads: "The Right Man in the Right Place. Jeff Davis Our First President." The image is somewhat light, as made. It is accompanied by an envelope inscribed "Relics of the Civil War". The badge and envelope were discovered within the pages of an old book. We recall only two previous auction appearances.
