DescriptionImportant Large, Oval Lincoln Ferrotype Brooch from 1860. This large variety brooch with serrated brass border was made for all four 1860 candidates, and all are rare. We have also seen a single set of all four vice-presidential candidates (each the only example we have encountered). A significant percentage of known examples of these ovals, due to the large and not-well-protected ferro surface, are found scratched or flaked. This one, from the Joe Brown Collection is a beauty except for being ever so slightly on the dark side. There is a small, rather odd surface depression below and to the left of Lincoln's left eye, apparently a quirk in manufacturing. However, it is not visible when the light is at a certain angle, and detracts minimally. All in all, a fine example, with original pin on verso. Certainly superior to the plate example in the Sullivan book. Measures 28 mm x 45 mm.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
