DescriptionGrant & Wilson: An Absolutely Stunning, Pristine 1872-dated Jugate Ferrotype. While this conjoined-bust ferro is known in other forms, as is the 1872-dated gilt brass frame, this is the first time we have seen them in this combination. Condition is almost unbelievable-we have never encountered a choicer campaign ferrotype-for any candidate!
1872 Grant-Wilson jugates are much rare than the 1868 Grant-Colfax versions: DeWitt/Sullivan picture only 4 varieties, as compared with 16 for the 1868 ticket. Perhaps Grant was considered such a shoe-in for re-election that it was thought unnecessary to spend money on campaign novelties. This example was purchased in the legendary John Ford Collection auction.
Collectors have always had a special affinity for items carrying the campaign year. Combining that appeal with rarity and condition, if one wishes to own one single Grant-Wilson jugate, this is the one! Diameter 24 mm.
