Description

George Francis Train: 1872 Gem Albumen Campaign Stickpin. 20mm x 26mm (¾" x 1") gem albumen badge featuring a portrait of noted eccentric and entrepreneur George Francis Train. It is inscribed below the portrait "For President 1872 George Francis Train" (some words partially obscured by embossed copper mat). Metal back plate with stickpin attachment. Train became quite wealthy though shipping and railroad interests. He set up the Credit Mobilier to finance the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. A staunch Unionist during the war, he initially supported Ulysses Grant, but turned against him and the corruption of his administration during the 1872 campaign. At the same time, some eccentricities in his personality developed as he sought to become Emperor of America. Various pieces of campaign ephemera were issued in his behalf in 1872, but it is unknown whether he received any votes, other than the one cast by himself. A similar piece is known for another social reformer of note, Victoria Woodhull, who became the first woman to run for president on the Equal Rights ticket. Mint condition and only the second example we have encountered.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
