Description

Fabulous Large 1864 Lincoln Ferrotype. One of the largest 1864 Lincoln ferro varieties, and definitely the largest on which his name appears. We have previously seen only several other examples, which were set into a brass charm, with Andrew Johnson's smaller image on the reverse side. This is a completely different variety: Lincoln alone is set into an unusual red thermoplastic case for carrying as a pocket piece. It originally had a matching screw-on lid, which has gotten separated from the item at some point. We have seen several Lincoln tintypes in this form over the years, with another bearded portrait, but this is first we have seen with this highly desirable ferro. Condition is basically excellent; although there are very trivial traces of light surface wear on the ferro itself (perhaps suggesting that it was carried as a pocket piece at the time without the protective lid). However, as the photo shows, these "feathery" little surface marks are all but inconsequential. Diameter overall is 35mm, with the ferro itself 23mm.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
