Buchanan & Breckinridge: A Unique Jugate Pair of Ambrotype Images from the 1856 Campaign. While photographic images came into wide use in 1860, a few such items did appear during the previous three elections. Cased pairs of small daguerreotype portraits of presidential and vice presidential candidates were produced in small numbers in 1848, and equally rare larger daguerreotype images of Pierce and Scott in oval brass shell frames are known from 1852. These early photographic items were intended as pocket pieces rather than to be worn as badges. That is clearly the case with this Buchanan and Breckinridge version, where the two delicate ambrotypes are protected by a well-made brass case in the form of a book with ornamental clasp (similar in concept but much better made than the familiar smaller Civil War-era charms with paper photos of Lincoln and his generals). Displayed open, it measures 2.375" x 1.375". But for some extremely minor small imperfections on the Buchanan image, mentioned for strictest accuracy, the condition is near mint. One of only two examples believed known and considered by David Frent to be one of his most important early photographic objects. Pictured in Arthur Schlesinger's Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images. 1789-1896, p. 235.
