DescriptionBell & Everett: A Very Choice 1860 "Doughnut" Ferrotype in the Largest Size. These 45 mm beauties (significantly larger than a silver dollar) were made for all four 1860 tickets, and have long been regarded as being among the premier campaign ferros. Because of the large exposed tintype surfaces they were quite vulnerable to damage. So while uncommon in any condition, they are particularly elusive in this superb state.
DeWitt/ Sullivan picture examples for all four candidates, but in each case they are varieties where the candidates' names are in the field around the portraits. The style offered here is actually rarer. The bulbous brass shell frame retains nearly all of its original silvering, which is partially or completely worn away on most examples we have encountered. Original suspension loop, almost always missing, at top. A terrific example!
