AWESOME 1848 CAMPAIGN DAGUERREOTYPE JUGATE OF TAYLOR AND FILLMORE. Our vocabulary does not include enough superlatives to do justice to this historic piece! Two ninth-plate dags of the Whig runningmates, both in Choice condition with bold images, mounted together in a book-form leather case. Both poses are familiar, campaign- used images. There is no question that these items were made for campaign use; matching images for Lewis Cass (Taylor’s 1848 opponent) and Henry Clay (an 1848 Whig hopeful for the presidency) are also known. Along with a small, round Taylor charm containing a daguerreotype image, these are without question the earliest known use of actual photographic images in the manufacture of campaign items! We know of no other existing examples of these Taylor and Fillmore images. This pair was privately sold in the hobby several years ago for over $15,000, and as is wont to happen, is coming back into the marketplace once again. The next owner may not release it so soon; this may literally be a "once in a lifetime opportunity’ to acquire this lovely, historically important item!
