Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckinridge and John Bell: An Almost Certainly Unique Matched Set of 1860 Ferrotypes in Very Rare Frames. Unique cross-hatched pattern, rather than the typical lettering and date. Diameter 23 mm. Although we seem to recall having handled one specimen of this distinctive frame, a search of our auction archives failed to turn up an example for any of the four 1860 contenders. Rare and intriguing as the frames may be, their appeal may even be eclipsed by the spectacular condition of these four: they are simply mint, and perfectly matched. Almost certainly they have been together since the day they were manufactured, most likely at the Connecticut factory of Scovill Manufacturing Company. This set is a very special offering, one for which even the most advanced Lincoln or pre-1896 specialist can make room for in his or her collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
