Abraham Lincoln: Highly Desirable Wide Awake Hat Badge. There are very few Lincoln collections that contain this unlisted campaign item from 1860. Similar to DeWitt #1 and King #1, it was produced by Childs of Chicago. This one measures 2" or 52 mm. across and appears to be made of embossed tin plate. An inner circle depicts a bust of the Republican candidate facing right, surrounded by the words "Abraham Lincoln 1860". There is an outer band of raised circles with the words "Wide Awake". Like DeWitt #1, we feel this was worn by members of the Lincoln marching club, the Wide Awake's, on the front of their hats. We are aware of four examples of DeWitt #1, but have never seen this variety. It has four little dimples (not affecting the portrait or inscription) and some light tarnish. There is a C-clasp pin attachment on the verso, not original to the piece. We don't expect to see another one of these anytime soon.
