    Description

1864 Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson Gault Frame Ferrotype. Large size and unique format make this one of the most desired 1864 varieties. It is especially popular because matching varieties for his 1864 opponents, George McClellen and John Fremont, are also available to make a great type set for the three 1864 candidates. The format, unique among ferro designs, is similar to that found on encased postage stamps of the same era. The present example is in extra fine condition, with virtually full original luster on the brass frame. Probably owing to the large exposed ferro surface, these Gault frame pieces tend to have damage on the Presidential side; often, as is the case here, the image is almost totally obliterated, while the better-protected Johnson portrait remains intact. Although Lincoln's face is slightly damaged this is still a choice piece for a political collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
