"George Clark Ambrotype" Lincoln 1860 Campaign Badge. This is the largest (2" x 2.5") and one of the most important of all Abraham Lincoln campaign badges- the first photographic item to appear in the campaign. It is hugely popular with collectors and recent auction records show perfect specimens selling in the $30,000 range. The Brady "Cooper Union" portrait of the Republican candidate is housed in a decorative gilt metal frame, holed for suspension and with the original "For President" insert card showing the manufacturer as Geo. Clark, Jr. & Co. (of Boston). Because of the nature of their manufacture, these items are quite fragile. This ambrotype has areas of flaking or bubbling of the emulsion and one distinct area of loss between right cheek and ear. There are several streaks of light discoloration as well. Still the overall appearance is pleasing and it would certainly make a fine addition to even an advanced collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
