    Description

F.D.R.'S PERSONAL CANE, GIVEN TO A BELOVED WHITE HOUSE SECRETARY WHO ALSO SUFFERED FROM POLIO.

One of the most evocative items in the Amyx Collection, it was given to Toinette "Toi" Bachelder by the President personally.  Like Roosevelt, she was afflicted with the dreaded polio virus as a child, and, like Roosevelt, she visited the natural spa at Warm Springs, Georgia, for its therapeutic waters.  On her first night there, in 1925, she met FDR when she was assigned to be his bridge partner.  The two struck up an immediate friendship, and she went to work at the White House when he became President.  She was at Warm Springs when he died in 1945, and rode back to Washington on the train with his body.  While she continued as a secretary at the White House until the Johnson years, it seems unlikely that she ever again enjoyed the close bond which their shared handicap created with FDR.  According to the book FDR's Splendid Deception (about the successful downplaying of his condition), FDR considered Bachelder not just a secretary, but part of his "inner circle."  We reproduce here her 1982 handwritten letter about this cane and her relationship with Roosevelt.  An interesting sidelight not in the letter, but related orally to Mr. Amyx when he acquired the cane from her, is that it was originally too long for the diminutive Miss Bachelder, so FDR ordered it sent down to the White House workshop immediately to have its length adjuster for her.  A terrific FDR memento.  Length 33."  It has a lovely patina formed by long years of use.  Also included is a snapshot of Miss Bachelder with this cane.
