Douglas & Johnson: Rare and Colorful Jugate Wall Chart with Original Wooden Rollers. 28" x 35.5" campaign poster published by H. H. Lloyd of New York, hand-colored paper with linen backing. Titled "National Democratic Chart. Presidential Campaign, 1860." It depicts colorful portraits of Douglas & Johnson beneath an eagle, draped flags and sunrise, captioned "National Democratic Candidates for President and Vice-President". The chart includes portraits of the previous Presidents, biographies of all except Washington, the Democratic platform of 1860, election statistics, a map of the United States and biographies of the candidates. Light soiling, bottom dowel or roller still attached. Top roller present, but detached. These charts were popular from 1856 through the 1890s, but none excite greater interest than those associated with the Lincoln elections. Some picture all the major party candidates, but those that focus on the individual party or ticket are the most sought-after. These tend to come with condition issues, specifically flaking and paper loss. This example is both excessively rare and extremely well-preserved, not to mention colorful and graphic! (When received by Heritage the top doll was separated from the chart. However, our professional restorer has re-attached it properly.)

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
