    Description

DeWitt Clinton: 1812 Rhode Island Presidential Ballot. 6 1/2" x 4" ballot titled "Clinton, Peace and Commerce." listing four presidential electors. Campaign material for this 1812 Federalist candidate who opposed James Madison is virtually non-existent. We believe this to be the only example extant. There is also one other Clinton ballot known, of a different design. Clinton was a man of great accomplishments who is little known today. Besides serving as Mayor of New York City and Governor of New York State, he oversaw the completion of the Erie Canal. Light toning with two areas of restoration in the blank field. Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
