    Description

Cox & Roosevelt: Fantastic "Keep Faith With Our Dead" Pro-League of Nations Jugate Poster. While Cox & Roosevelt jugate posters are generally available in at least three different styles, they literally can't "shine the shoes" of this unique oversize poster with great content, color and graphics. It is a signature piece of the Frent Collection and rightly merits "cover lot" status. It measures an ample 28" x 44.5" and is titled "Keep Faith With Our Dead". Going from top to bottom, we see a waving American flag, the stanzas of the Star Spangled Banner, and portraits of Democratic nominees Cox and Roosevelt flanking a panel with quotes by Harding and others advocating for a separate peace treaty between the United States and Germany. The two bottom side panels have quotes by Great Americans Past & Present in favor of Peace and a League of Nations. The central lower panel is titled "What is Wilsonism?" It lists the policies of President Wilson in regard to the war and its aftermath. There are also statements by Wilson defending Article X of the Covenant of the League of Nations against criticisms that it would preclude the United States from declaring war when deemed necessary and expedient. The panel concludes by saying: "Let Wilsonism be tried in the balance and God help America if honest men and women blindfold themselves and permit thieves and slanderers to manipulate the scales."

Pictured in Schlesinger's Running for President 1900-1992, volume 2, page 119. It has recently been mounted on linen to expedite handling and stabilize some border tears at top & bottom. There has been no cleaning and minimal restoration. Truly a unique opportunity to acquire a monumental piece of 20th century political Americana. This poster presents a "perfect storm of desirability":
    1. It depicts the toughest 20th century candidates
    2. The content could not be more illustrative of the 1920 Democratic campaign theme
    3. The size and graphics could not be more dramatic
    4. It is presumably the only known example

In our opinion, undoubtedly the most important and valuable 20th century political poster, and eminently deserving of its full-page image in Running for President.
From the Collection of David and Janice Frent
