Benjamin Harrison: 1889 Presidential Tapestry From Wisconsin. 51" x 72" fringed wool coverlet woven by a Swedish-American resident of Wisconsin circa 1895. There are a wide range of inscriptions and dates, ranging up to 1895; however, it may have been made to commemorate a wedding that took place in 1889 between Nils August Siostrom and Johanna Albertina Siostrom in Cumberland, Barron County, Wisconsin, per the inscription on the bottom. Design elements include crucifixes, birds and grapevines. The central portion lists the Presidents from Fillmore through Harrison, along with some amusing spelling errors ("Andrew Af. Tennessee" and "Ulisses S. Grant Af. Illinois"). Three small repair patches on back side, modern reinforcement linen panels stitched to top and bottom. Modern wooden dowel attached at top. The red dye has areas of bleed-through. A unique piece of folk art from the Heartland.
