Benjamin F. Butler: An Iconic Third Party Rarity in Superb Condition. Butler was the Greenback Labor Party candidate for President in 1884. A well-known Civil War general and former Massachusetts governor, Butler was one of the most prominent men ever to seek the Presidency as a third party candidate. The Greenback Party was definitely on the left side of the political spectrum and Butler's photo is surrounded by the slogan "Workingman's Friend". The spoon alludes to Butler's reputation as a harsh military governor of occupied New Orleans where no rebel sympathizer's silverware was safe, hence the moniker "Spoons Butler". DeWitt/Sullivan (who list this item as BB-1884-3) call the spoon a hanger, but neither the present example nor the one pictured in the book show any indication of having had a pin attached. Overall measurement 43 mm x 30 mm and in gleaming near mint condition.
