Bell & Everett: An 1860 Jugate Silk Campaign Ribbon, the Mate to the Lincoln & Hamlin Version also Appearing in this Auction. This is the Sullivan & Fischer plate example (JBell-2, p.148), and is one of only two examples of which we are aware. Other than the familiar single-portrait and jugate ribbons with Brady photos, Bell ribbons are exceedingly rare. Sullivan & Fischer picture only four other varieties, only one of which we have ever seen offered. We would be surprised if the entire known population of Bell ribbons other than the Brady varieties numbers as many as a dozen copies.

Like the Lincoln & Hamlin mate, this one is in crisp, near-mint condition. It clearly came from the same old collection and has been similarly mounted, but once again this should not be a concern, as this was done decades ago and there has been no glue bleedthrough. One utterly trivial small, light water stain in the field at the bottom is noted for strictest accuracy. Length 7.375".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
