Another Highly-Desirable Variety of George Washington Inaugural Shank Button. This is one of the most-desired varieties as it bears the 1789 date and the unique "memorable era" legend. This brass example is Albert WI 1-A. A high percentage of GWs have corroded or significantly damaged surfaces. This one is exceptionally clean and virtually damage-free. Everything is very sharp except for an oddly worn area at 5 o'clock, partially eliminating the "r" and "a" in Era. There is no apparent reason for this area to wear differently from the rest of the surface, so perhaps the die was deteriorating there (we note that the word "Era" is also weak in Albert's plate specimen). Lovely color and patina, with the original shank. A distinctly superior of this popular design. Diameter 34mm.
