    Description

Annie Oakley: Her Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medallion. After the command performance of Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1887, Annie Oakley was presented by Cody to Queen Victoria who said, "You are a very clever little girl." Annie cherished the compliment as she cherished the bronze medallion given her. This is it: the official bronze medal struck in honor of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, with its case of issue. The medal is slightly over 3" in diameter (77mm). On its face is a crowned bust of Victoria under the legend "Regina et Imperiatrix." The sculptor's initials, JEB are below (for Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm). On the reverse, sculpted by Sir Frederick Leighton, is a representation of the queen on her throne surrounded by angels, figures of arts and industry, and the extent of her realm: "Asia, America, Europe, Australasia, Africa." (The sun never sets, etc.). The case is rubbed and has a broken clasp; the medallion is like new. This lot is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described.
