RARE AND WONDERFUL 1904 ROOSEVELT AND FAIRBANKS CAMPAIGN POCKET WATCH. Jugate portraits on the dial, with the slogan "Protection and Prosperity." This watch and its Parker-Davis mate were issued by the Ingersoll Company, and fall into a tradition of such items ranging from several different varieties of 1860-65 Lincoln watches to rare jugates for Cox-Roosevelt and Harding-Coolidge in 1920. They were inexpensive watches at the time, falling into a category known by watch hobbyists as "dollar watches." Although there may be others in watch collectors’ hands, we know of only several examples in the political item hobby. The last one we can recall on the open market appeared in one of our 1991 auctions where it fetched $4450. This one is in excellent condition and in running order (although we didn’t guarantee it to keep good time. These "dollar watches." weren’t so great even when brand new!). For the sake of accuracy we note a couple of minor shallow indentations in the metal case on the reverse side, which of course do not even show when the watch is displayed.
