GARFIELD CANDY WRAPPER.. Beginning in the mid-19th century, manufacturers began to take advantage of the public’s interest in politics by naming products after candidates. Sometimes opposing candidates would be so honored, and their popularity gauged by sales records. From Buchanan and Lincoln breath mints to Nixon and Kennedy Good Humor ice cream bars, the commercialization has continued for many-a-year. "Baby Ruth" candy bars were named after Grover Cleveland’s daughter, and constitutes the most famous example. This colorful 2 x 3 3/4" paper wrapper depicts James Garfield and is inscribed "Our Candy Date", an obvious play on the word "candidate." It was no doubt issued for the 1880 election and may be the sole survivor!
