Abraham Lincoln: Wooden Parade Ax. 30.5" long ax carried by members of the Wide Awakes marching club, in support of Abraham Lincoln in the pivotal election of 1860. The ax head has a painted inscription on one side, reading: "Lincoln Campaign 1860 Rail Splitters' Brigade". The other side has an old paper label affixed, reading: "Carried by John E. Edmunds". The Wide Awakes were organized along military lines, with special uniforms, lanterns and accoutrements, so the adjective brigade is totally in line. They were led by captains and lieutenants who carried red or blue glass lanterns. Besides banners and double-swivel Pitkin torches, they occasionally carried rifle torches or wooden axes, symbolic of the "Rail Splitter" candidate. These axes varied in size, construction and inscription. We are personally aware of no more than six examples of wooden parade axes from 1860 still extant. They are wonderful display pieces, easy to display and care for. Condition: Some roughness to the edge of the blade, but generally in very good condition, displaying requisite age and character.
