Abraham Lincoln: Porcelain Bas-Relief Inaugural Wall Plaque. 6.75" glazed and unglazed (bisque) porcelain plaque or roundel. It has a raised bust of a beardless Lincoln in a central depression. The raised border has banding in gold and three shades of blue. A reticulated wreath at top is painted pink. There is gold script lettering below the portrait reading: "Abraham Lincoln, Born Feby. 12th 1809./ Inaugurated President, March 4th 1861." There is a hole at top for suspension. The back side is covered with remnants of brown paper. Although unmarked, it is quite similar to a memorial plaque sold in a past Railsplitter auction which was attributed to August Wilhelm Fridolin Kister of Scheibe Alsbach, Thuringia (Germany). Kister took over the factory in 1863, but the company was founded in 1835 and ceased operations in 1991. Although the front of the plaque is in bas-relief, the back side is perfectly flat. Outside of a shallow flake on the backside of the wreath at top, it is in mint condition. While it may have been made for the 1861 inauguration, we suspect it may date from the 1863-1865 period, prior to Lincoln's assassination. It is very handsome and, to the best of our knowledge, the only example known.
