Abraham Lincoln: Cased Quarter Plate Tintype. This tintype was copied from Alexander Gardner's portrait of Lincoln taken on November 8, 1863, just prior to Lincoln's departure for the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg. It emphasizes Lincoln's long, lanky legs and depicts him seated in the famous Brady chair, formerly used in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was common practice for tintype copy images to be produced from albumen originals. We have seen examples for both Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth. The condition is excellent with a network of fine lines, done in the making, visible only at an angle. It is housed in a brown leather case measuring 3" x 3.5". A similar example was sold by Heritage in our December 2006 Civil War auction for $9,560.
