Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson: Extremely Rare and Important 1864 Campaign Flag Banner.
Many collectors considered nineteenth-century campaign flags to be the aristocrats of the political hobby -- a feeling certainly reflected in auction prices. Portrait flags rank above name flags, and of course those at the pinnacle are the ones in support of Abraham Lincoln.

1860 versions are rare, but 1864 varieties are prohibitively so. We doubt there are more than six to eight examples known in total of all designs. The present style was made in three sizes, this being the medium one. Single specimens of the smaller and larger versions are known, and we are aware of one other in this size, a badly faded and point-stained flag which fetched $18,000 in a 1997 Slater's American auction at the APIC National Convention. In May 2015, Heritage sold an 1864 portrait flag banner in a totally different style for $106,250.

Rarely are these flags found in perfect condition, and this example does have minor condition issues. As often seen the blue has faded to a blue-gray hue, and there are several minor scattered small stain and soiling marks. But the flag is in very solid overall condition, and we would describe it as very good shape for display overall. Certainly it is far superior to the other specimen known in this size. 13.25" x 9.5", nicely custom-framed to 17.5" x 12.5". An opportunity not likely to be repeated soon for the advanced Lincoln or political display items collector.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
