Abraham Lincoln: An Outstanding Ruby Ambrotype Portrait From an 1860 Campaign Photograph. This photo was taken by Alexander Hesler in Springfield, Illinois on June 3, 1860. The present image is reversed, the original having Lincoln facing right. This is quite common in photographic copy images of the day. It was one of three poses taken that day, all of which were widely used to promote Lincoln in the coming election campaign. Lincoln's long time law partner William Herndon wrote of this image as "essentially Lincolnian; no other artist has ever caught it". Lincoln himself said of one of the other images shot by Hessler that day, "that looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people I am satisfied." Condition is basically excellent. There is a minor discoloration at 10:00, not affecting the portrait and one fine scratch running from Lincoln's forehead across his hair above his left ear. However neither detracts significantly, and it is otherwise very choice. We have seen this image only in an albumen form and never in a ruby ambrotype such as this. A superb Lincoln item. It is set into a presumably original leatherette case that is in beautiful condition as well. Dimensions: Photo:1.5" x 2", overall with case open: 5.1" x 3".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
