    Description

Zachary Taylor: Magnificent, Massive circa 1847-1850 Rockingham Bennington Pottery Pitcher. Height 12.75", width (nose to handle) 12.75". "Rough & Ready" on streamers on either side above his head. Sometimes pieces like this one are termed "toby mugs," but the size in this case would seem to preclude that nomenclature. Virtually mint condition and certainly one of the most imposing political/presidential display pieces we have ever offered.

This distinctive type of pottery, featuring a heavy mottled yellow and brown streaked glaze, was developed in Rockingham, England around 1770. Various English potters emigrated to America over the next 75 years, and ceramics of this type came to be produced in locations from New England to Baltimore. Often these pieces are termed "Bennington pottery" because that town in Vermont was the home of the United States Pottery Company, which became mass producers of pieces with this distinctive glaze in the late 19th to early 20th century. Most makers did not use impressed marks or logos since the thick glaze tended to fill them in, and our research has failed to identify the identity of the specific firm which produced this "Rough & Ready" jug. However, the size, quality and subject matter clearly mark this as a tour-de-force within that popular pottery category. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
