Zachary Taylor: Colorful Forget-Me-Not Type of Box with His Portrait. These lovely small boxes were made in the form of a miniature book. On the front is a full-color portrait under glass. The hinged lid opens to reveal a mirror on the underside. Typically the backs carry the slogan "Forget Me Not", but the reverse of this one is just a blank white field under glass. It seems clear that the box has never been disassembled, so this is as made. These boxes are found with images of Washington, Taylor, and John Quincy Adams. Since Taylor died in 1850 and Adams in 1848, it has been suggested that they were produced around 1850 as remembrances of the men pictured. However, another theory argues that they were simply decorated with the images of men in the public eye, and that the slogan encouraged the recipient to remember the giver. In any case, these diminutive boxes have great charm and have always been collector favorites. They are notoriously prone to condition problems, notably cracked glass and missing sections of the gilt paper foil trim. The present example is in excellent shape, except that the lid is clearly separated along the paper hinge, an easy restoration. 1.375" x 2.625" and 0.625" thick. From the collection of U. I. "Chick" Harris.
