Winfield Scott: Rare Political Whale Tooth Scrimshaw. Patriotic and political themes were popular with the mid-19th century folk artists who created this engaging genre. The present example is one of the nicest we have seen, depicting one of the toughest candidates of that era for whom to find anything more than a couple of common varieties of brass tokens. The 1852 Whig candidate appears in civilian dress, a nice touch, because most Scott items are from the Mexican War period, and depict him in uniform. Above is an eagle holding a streamer that reads "The People's Choice", with Scott's name and crossed flags below. Before residing in the Harris collection, it was in the collection of pioneer hobbyist Ed Puls, who probably collected it in the 1950-60s. Condition is excellent, with lovely, soft golden tan patina. Height 5.75". From the collection of U. I. "Chick" Harris.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
