    Description

Winfield Scott: Extremely Rare Lithopane Portrait with Original Cast Metal Display Stand. A translucent white porcelain panel is contoured such that, when lit from behind, a marvelous image that looks almost three-dimensional is revealed. Among the rarest and most sought-after of all political display items, lithopanes were made depicting several political and military figures for the 1840s-1850s era. This one, with Scott in military uniform, probably originated during the Mexican-American War, in which he played a prominent role. However, specifically campaign-related items for this 1852 Whig presidential nominee are very rare, and most political collectors eagerly accept war-related ones as well. We could estimate that there are fewer than then of these lithopanes of all candidates known in the hobby, and this is the first we have handled in over three decades of dealing in and auctioning serious political collectibles! It is in beautiful condition with the porcelain panel itself measuring 6.25" x 8.25". Overall height on the stand is 15.5". One of the most special among the many wonderful objects offered from this collection.
