Winfield Scott: A Rare and Beautiful 1848-Dated Display Item. These elegant plaques, sold with a small loop at the top for suspension, must have caused quite a stir when they first appeared. Also found for other prominent Americans such as Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, and Lewis Cass, they featured an engraving of a daguerreotype portrait, "framed" in ornate reverse-painted gold and silver scrollwork against a glossy black background. The reverse of each carries a large label with advertising for the publisher and a tribute to the celebrity picture.

Although sealed around the perimeter with a sort of paper tape border, these items were extremely vulnerable to moisture seepage, and most known examples exhibit flaking and/or water staining of the portrait. This Winfield Scott example is near mint, and as fine as any we have encountered.

Winfield Scott was the Whig candidate for president in 1852. However, very few of the novelties celebrating his accomplishments can be expressly tied to the campaign. Most merely refer to his Mexican War exploits, so political collectors typically accept the items of this general era. Choice condition. 5" x 6".
